I'd remembered reading an article in The New Yorker on Constance Garnett and “Translation Wars.” I remember that the article led me to purchase the Rosemary Edmonds' translation of War and Peace. The Stieg Larsson books, the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of “War and Peace,” and Laurie Sheck's “A Monster's Notes,” to name just a few (many more from his portfolio are delightfully catalogued on his Web site). As I've mentioned elsewhere, I opted to use the Richard Pevear/Larissa Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace for numerous reasons. The translating team's Anna Karenina was reviewed in the same magazine here; James Wood discussed the Pevear and Volokhonsky War and Peace here. Take this short sentence: Kápli kápali. Most recent fun: a review of War and Peace, translated by Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky. All these editions of War and Peace are really starting to pile up on my shelves. The same issue of being loyal to stylistic sound effects pervades the Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky translation of War and Peace. Has anyone read the My favorite War & Peace translation is the one by Pevear & Volokhonsky. I am no expert on the subject of course, but would like to perhaps read War and Peace again at christmas time.
